Lot Essay
Whilst staying in Venice the sound of the gun salute brought Cooke out to see H.M. ship bearing the deposed King of Greece, Otho of Bavaria, anchoring off the Riva. Flag etiquette is observed with the ex-King's standard still flying at the masthead. Cooke captured the scene in a spirited composition which was subsequently exhibited at the British Institution.
Born in Salzburg in 1815 Otho, son of King Louis I of Bavaria, was chosen by the conference of London in 1832 to occupy the newly created throne of Greece. His power rested solely on the support of the Bavarian army and he was deposed in 1862. Prince George of Denmark was then elected King in his place.
