Peel Castle stands on the tiny St Patrick's Isle, which is situated north of the city of Peel on the west coast of the Isle of Man. St Patrick is said to have alighted here when he brought Christianity to the Manx people. The isle was a Viking stronghold during the 11th century but subsequently resumed its Christian identity. It became the site of many important Christian monuments, the ruins of which are still encircled by Peel castle's sandstone walls. These include St Patrick's Church and the Round Tower from the 11th century, and the 13th century Cathedral of St German. The castle was built in 14th century. It was at this time that the Isle of Man came under English sovereignity.
John Wright Oakes was a landscape painter in the tradition of B.W. Leader and George Vicat Cole. He was born in Liverpool, and exhibited both there and London. The present picture is undated, but is perhaps contemporary with A Fresh Breeze - Fisshing Luggers leaving Peel Harbour that Oakes exhibited at the Academy in 1854.
