Lot Essay

William Clarke Wontner was the friend and one-time tutor of John William Godward , R.B.A. (1861-1922, see lot 162). They shared a neo-classical aesthetic; and Wontner's portraits and ideal heads are often rendered in glowing colours set against a marble backdrop.
