THE FABULOUS CELLARS OF LUTECE RESTAURANT
The following selection of wines come from the venerable cellars of the famed Lutece Restaurant. Lutece opened in 1961 with Chef Andre Soltner at the helm. From that time and for the next 40 years it became the standard to which all other French restaurants in the country aspired. It was early on that Chef Soltner realized that with great food, came great wine. He worked with importers to bring to him only the best, and in several cases went directly to the wineries so they would make a cuvee directly for him.
The cellars of Lutece were several rooms next to and below the restaurant, which at their height contained over 40,000 bottles. They were classified into regions and vintages; Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Rhone and Port to start; only later would California and the new world take part. There were dusty empty bottles all over the cellar which told of dinner past; you could almost imagine the bottle of 1961 Petrus, the magnum of 1945 Mouton-Rothschild or the jeroboam of 1966 Romanee-Conti; patrons surrounded at the table, glasses hoisted in the air with the delicious food of Chef Soltner in front of them.
Unfortunately, the last dinner was served at Lutece on Valentines day in 2004. Since that time the wine has been resting in these cellars, and Christie's has had the please to work with Chef Soltner and the Ark restaurant Group to bring these selections to you.
We hope you enjoy them in your home, as much as the patrons of Lutece have over the last 40 years.
