Lot Essay

The present composition is an autograph variant, with minor differences, of Jan Brueghel the Younger's still life formerly in the Ardenne collection, Dordrecht (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Jüngere: Die Gemälde mit kritischem OEuvrekatalog, Freren, 1984, pp. 450-1, no. 287, illustrated) and of the painting sold at Sotheby's, London, 14 December 2000, lot 10 (£190,000). Other versions are known, mostly by anonymous followers of Jan Brueghel the Elder (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere: Die Gemälde mit kritischem OEuvrekatalog, Cologne, 1979, pp. 294-5, figs. 368-70).
