The present study is typical of the work of a group of artists who Bidauld inspired. The artist adopts a broad, horizontal format to depict an expansive mountainous landscape receding into the distance. In the spirit of Valenciennes who instructed his students to emphasize the middle ground of their compositions as the true subject of their work, the artist of this painting positions the lake with its distant shore of beach and green meadow as the centerpiece of his work.
