Statuette en terre cuite avec grelots représentant un personnage allongé sur un lit à arceaux, le visage montrant une expression de douleur, le corps sanglé d'une couverture à bandeau décoratif géométrique, les jambes relevées sur un coussin, les mains agrippées aux montants du lit, les pieds, les oreilles et le cou ornés de bijoux et la tête couverte d'un élégant chapeau à motifs incisés. Traces abondantes de pigmentation rouge.

LATE CLASSIC, CA. A.D. 550-950
The recumbent male figure lying on a bed with tall legs, possibly awaiting a preparation of hallucinogens, his face in an expression of ecstasy, adorned with a "repoussé" sash jewellery and rectangular headdress, with extensive traces of red pigment; containing rattles within.
Adult figures strapped on beds appear in Late Classic phase of Veracruz sculpture. Various interpretations of this subject have been presented. One suggestion is that a pulque ceremony is being conducted. According to this hypothesis, the prone male lies on a platform with his legs raised to accomodate the pulque enema. Another view is that the scene depicts a shamanastic "curing" ritual.
