MAYAN ALABASTER LIDDED VESSEL
LATE CLASSIC, CA. A.D. 550-950
The ritual container with tall, flaring semi-translucent walls, the domed lid engraved with large glyphs, one a quincunx and another possibly read as "the vessel", the finial in the form of the head of one of the Hero Twins, with lips parted and sunken eyes, striated hair swept backward, red pigment highlighting the glyphs and facial details.
The Hero Twins (Hunahpu and Xbalanque) are the main figures in two of the five myths of the Popol Vuh, the Quiche legend of creation. The Hero Twins are not creator deities or gods but rather trickster figures who outsmart certain supernatural characters inhabiting the Underworld (Xibalba).
