Lot Essay

The recipient of a scholarship from the Villa Romana in 1965, Baselitz spent the year in Florence. There he discovered Italian Mannerism and started to collect works of art from this period. He began to introduce landscape and animals into his work, adopting a grotesque fairy tale atmosphere, very different from his previous aggressive, agonised visions of Berlin. Baselitz's woodcuts from the mid 1960's allude to the chiaroscuro woodcuts by Goltzius and the Italian Mannerists. Their influence is apparent in the monumentality of Baselitz's figures, their bodily distortions and exaggerated emotions.
