Heckel served as a medical orderly in Flanders during the First World War, volunteering for the Red Cross at the outset of the conflict. His experiences of treating the wounded behind the frontline found expression in a series of drawings, while wartime landscapes such as Frühling in Flandern (Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum, Hagen; Vogt 1916/8) sought to record the war-ravaged terrain. The present work, Roter Steinbruch, resounds with the characteristic tension
