An unusual 19th-Century French mahogany expanding thermometer,
unsigned, the main part of the instrument comprising a shaped mahogany plate with suspension loop for vertical hanging, and a curved engraved brass scale at the top marked Thermomètre and Glace at the left-hand end, graduated 0-33, a horizontal brass bar near the base supporting the expanding section, a thin semi-circular piece of mahogany (cracked) held in a light brass frame with index arm on a brass bar, the latter moved fractionally by expansion and contraction of the wooden sheet -- 24.5cm. (9 5/8in.) high
