A fine example of a 18th-Century money steelyard,
signed B.Martin, 18th-Century, third quarter, the ivory beam with two scales divided for shillings, graduated 0-80 and 0-40, with a copper-pan suspended from the end, a string suspension loop attached to the beginning of the scales, and with two letter weights or poises with string loops, seven grain weights and a folded piece of paper entitled DIRECTIONS for the use of the English DOGEN, or MONEY STEEL-YARD. Invented, Made, and Sold by BENJAMIN MARTIN, in Fleet-Street (slight tear and foxing), the shaped, compartmentalised card case is plush-lined and covered in black fishskin, the beam --18.3cm. (7¼in.) long
