A rare mid 18th-Century 2¾-inch diameter terrestrial pocket globe,
A NEW Terrestrial GLOBE by Nath Hill 1754 made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees, subdivided to 1° and labelled every 15°, the meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the meridian at 150°W subdivided to 1° and labelled every 10°, the ecliptic subdivided to 1° and unlabelled bar sigils for the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans showing ocean currents and the tracks of Admiral Anson, the continents and nation states outlined in green, red and yellow, Siberia shaded in green, showing rivers, mountains in pictorial relief and some cities, north-eastern Asia labelled Parts Unknown, China showing the Great Wall, a narrow strait shown by portions of facing coastline north of Japan, Dampier's Strait shown, Australia labelled NEW HOLLAND with no eastern coastline but joined to New Guinea, labelled in the North Dimens Land, Tasmania also labelled Dimens Land with no northern coastline, New Zealand shown as a short stretch of western coastline, North America showing the Annian Straits and California as a peninsula, Canada labelled in the West Unknown Parts and with no northern or western coastline (north polar calotte faded, neatly repaired cracks in the southern hemisphere, minor fading in Africa) in a spherical fishskin-covered wooden case, the interior laid with two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved celestial gore and two polar calottes laid to the celestial poles, the equatorial and colures graduated in degrees, labelled only in the southern hemisphere, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures, strongly coloured and unvarnished, the case rim painted red, with two brass hooks and eyes
