Lot Essay

La tranchée is a preliminary study for the oil La tranchée avec la Montagne Sainte-Victoire (R 156) at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich. Adrien Chappuis had words of praise for this drawing: 'The accents in ink are audacious. In this rather harsh sketch there is a kind of grandeur which surpasses contemporary conceptions' (op. cit.).
