Lot Essay

Following on the heels of the Russian Revolution and the new social order ushered in as a result, Yuri Annenkov enthusiastically threw himself into the artistic and theatrical developments which were rapidly developing in and around the capital city.

Having begun working in collage format as early as 1915, the present work reflects the creative idiom of the intense transformative years in Russia. While it anticipates the complex innovations of Constructivism, the daring juxtaposition of wood, paper, watercolour and metal wire is deeply rooted in the avant-garde graphic design so pivotal to Annenkov's development.
