Lot Essay

Robert Descharnes has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

In 1946, Norman Coe of the perfume maker Leigh commissioned Dalí to produce paintings and an advertising program for Desert Flower, the company's new fragrance. From June to September of that year, while staying at the Del Monte Lodge, Pebble Beach, California, Dalí worked on a number of oil paintings and related advertising material. He ultimatly created three large oils which would be used in the marketing for Desert Flowers: Oasis, The Invisible Lovers and Mirage. The present gouache, with a typical Surrealist twist and meta-artistic intention, pays homage to these three paintings, depicted in miniature versions in situ in Dalí's study.
