Lot Essay

Other portraits of Adriana Negretti, the wife of the artist, are illustrated in H. Schwarz, 'Palma Giovane and his family: observation on some portrait drawings', Master Drawings, 1965 (IV), pp. 158-65, pls. 20b-26a. By comparison with these portraits the present drawing probably dates from the 1580s. Portraits of Palma, rarer than those of his family, are also illustrated in Schwarz's article.
