The attribution was kindly suggested by Nancy Ward Neilson on the basis of a photograph in a communication dated 5 May 2004. Dr. Ward Neilson compares the style of the drawing to that of a picture of the Crucifixion with Scenes from the Passion formerly attributed to Lomazzo, in the Palazzo dell'Arcivescovado, Milan (F. Frangi in Musei e Gallerie di Milano, Quadrerio dell'Arcivescovado, Milan, 1999, no. 26). The figure type, particularly the heads and the slightly exaggerated features, are similar.
Da Monte worked between Milan and Crema in the 1560s. From 1571 he was in Vienna and Prague working for the Habsburg Court. In 1580 he returned to Milan where he died (C. Alpini, I Campi, exhib. cat., Cremona, 1985, pp. 212-3).
