Lot Essay

The strips of coloured paper laid down along the margins of the drawing are typical of Italian 17th and 18th Century mounts. A number of drawings with similar green strips and inscriptions by the same hand are in the Uffizi (Il Seicento Fiorentino, exhib. cat., Florence, Palazzo Strozzi, 1986, nos. 2.160, 2.237 and 2.329) and sold at Christie's, New York, 21 January 2001, lot 45.
