Lot Essay

Fifteen caricatures by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo from the collection of the Conti Valmarana, of the same size and technique as the present drawing and likewise often with the corners cut, are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (J. Byam Shaw and G. Knox, The Robert Lehman Collection, VI, Italian Eighteenth-Century Drawings, New York, 1987, nos. 97-111). The Valmarana group are separate from the now disbound album of caricatures formerly owned by Arthur Kay.
