On Francesco Guardi's death in 1793 the contents of his studio passed to his youngest son Giacomo, who used it as a valuable resource for the remainder of his career. In addition to selling the finished works, Giacomo also seems to have completed several of his father's pen and brown ink views with grey wash, as in the present drawing. Another drawing of the same view by both artists is in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne (A. Morassi, Guardi, I disegni, Venice, 1973 (reprinted 1984), no. 350, fig. 354). A drawing of the view by Giacomo alone, which by contrast highlights the quality of the pen and ink drawing in the present work, is in the Correr Museum, Venice (A. Morassi, op. cit., fig. 632).
