Very similar in size, technique and handling to Callot's figure studies made in connection with his engraving of The Fair at Impruneta (Lieure 478), published in 1620, of which the majority are in the Uffizi (D. Ternois, Jacques Callot. Catalogue complet de son oeuvre dessiné, Paris, 1962, nos. 251-402bis). The present drawing can also be compared to a study of a whipper-in connected to Callot's The Great Hunt (Lieure 353, dated by Ternois to 1619-20), which was likewise in Sir Joshua Reynolds' collection. The quality of the draughtsmanship is certainly higher than that of the figure drawings formerly in the colection of Count Cobenzl which were deaccessioned from the Hermitage and which Ternois excludes from his corpus of Callot drawings.
