Philip Pouncey named this artist after a group of drawings from the collection of the Earl of Egmont (1683-1748) now at the Yale University Art Gallery. The apparently Northern artist lived in Italy at the end of the 16th Century. The present drawing is close to one at Yale (E. Haverkamp Begemann and A.-M. Logan, European Drawings and Watercolours in the Yale University Art Gallery: 1500-1800, New Haven and London, 1970, no. 497, pl. 270) and to another from the collection of Pierre de Charmant sold at Christie's, Paris, 21 March 2002, lot 95. Another drawing by the Master of the Egmont Albums of the same subject is at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
Nicole Dacos suggests that the artist can be identified as Dirck Hendricksz. Centen, active in Naples in the late 16th Century.
