Lot Essay
Peter Schatborn kindly suggested the attribution to Jan Baptist Weenix. Mr. Schatborn pointed out that the drawing was probably done from life, adding that 'He is one of the few artists in the 17th century who made landscape drawings with red chalk. The many hatchings on the cart and the gate are very characteristic for him. The rather stylized tree corresponds also to some of the trees in other drawings. He was an italianate artist who went to Rome in the mid 1640s. Other red chalk drawings by Weenix were sold from the Hans van Leeuwen Collection at Christie's, Amsterdam, 24 November 1992, lot 227 and 14 November 1988, lot 131'. Another drawing by Weenix was sold at Christie's, New York, 23 January 2002, lot 118.
