Lot Essay

A variation of the composition by Girodet is at Montargis (J. Boutet-Loyer, op. cit., no. 42). That drawing, much smaller than the present one, bears the size of the final work, 10 pieds by 13 pieds. Jacqueline Boutet-Loyer mentions two further drawings by Girodet of the subject, one from Firmin-Didot's collection and another sold in Paris in 1862, but these could equally correspond to the present drawing or the one at Montargis.
