Lot Essay

The a candeliere decoration on this piece is a classical example of the style codified some 25 years later by Cipriano Picolpasso. The arrangement of the symmetrical decoration on the surface of the bottle is particularly rich, as is the use of the whole gamut of colours available at the time to the Deruta painters. The fact that the bottle was intended to contain Rosewater suggests that this piece was made for domestic use rather than for a pharmacy, and also accounts for the exceptional sophistication of the decoration. According to the Gillet catalogue, there are a significant number of pieces of this quality of execution produced around 1507.

The present lot is exceptional both for its size and for the variety of the decorative elements. The armorial example at Faenza, Donazione Angiolo Fanfani, no. 96, is some 3 cm. shorter and has less elaborate decorative elements and a much less complex robbiana. The same quality of a candeliere decoration is found on Deruta tondini.
