Lot Essay

This elegantly serpentined chair is designed in the 'picturesque' manner popularised by Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director of 1754. The leg relates to that on a chair dated 1753 and the arm relates to that on a 'French Chair' (Director, 3rd ed., 1762, plates 14 and 19).
A related armchair, possibly by Thomas Chippendale, was sold in the 50 Years of Collecting sale, Christie's, London, 14 May 2003, lot 68.
