Lot Essay

The pattern for the palm-flowered and reeded handle, numbered '1487', features in an 18th Century metal-worker's pattern book preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum (N. Goodison, 'Metal-Work Pattern Books', Furniture History, 1975, pl. 22). The circular plate design is different from the 18th century pattern. A mahogany serpentine chest with the same pattern of shaped pull and a further variation of circular plate design was sold in the 50 Years of Collecting sale, Christie's London, 14 May 2003, lot 110.
