Thomas Mercer, St. Albans, No. 1208. Sold 21 March, 1974
The brush-finished case with bevelled lead glasses to the sides and escapement viewing aperture to the top, the rear plate engraved with hand and wind-set instructions and also with stop/start lever to the escapement, further signed THOMAS MERCER ST ALBANS ENGLAND ESTABLISHED 1858 1208, the silvered dial signed Thomas Mercer above the Roman chapter ring with subsidiary seconds at XII and up-and-down sector above VI, blued steel hands, the movement with substantial spotted plates with four double-screwed pillars, large spotted escapement platform with palladium helical balance spring to cut bimetallic balance with circular heat compensation weights, Earnshaw-type spring detent escapement, the platform punch-numbered 1238, the contrate jewelled screwed chatons, key-sleeve to the winding square on the spotted backplate further signed Thomas Mercer St. Albans No. 1208; with the original black leather travelling case with original key within the blue velvet cushioned lid; together with the original Mercer rating certificate signed by Tony Mercer and dated 9th April, 1974 guaranteeing a daily rate of minus 0.3; and the original bill of sale to Mr A. Waterstow of Ilford, England, dated 21st March, 1974
