A Victorian engraved gilt-metal striking large strut clock
Thomas Cole, London, No. 1043. Retailed by M.F. Dent, London. Circa 1860
The silvered dial exquisitely engraved with scrolling foliage and centred by a gadrooned urn overflowing with fruit and flowers, the chapter ring with painted Roman numerals and delicated blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, signed in a cartouche below by the retailer M.F. DENT 33 COCKSPUR St. LONDON, the movement with gilt front plate and split backplates for the two trains, with lever escapement with three-armed steel balance, the strike train with going barrel and strike on a gong of square section with trip repeat slide activated at the back of the case, the case engraved with foliage in Cole's typical manner, punch-numbered 1043 on the base, the rear with shuttered escapement portal and twin winding slides, standing on a foliate engraved swivel stand or reclining on a hinged strut; with the original black leather travelling case with green velvet lining embossed in gold M.F. DENT CHRONOMETER MAKER TO HER LATE MAJESTY 34. COCKSPUR St. CHARING CROSS LONDON.
