Château Beychevelle--Vintage 1988
Saint-Julien, 4me cru classé. Château-bottled
Tasting note: At a mammoth British Airways tasting in 1995: High mark for its bouquet, and one of the highest for its rich, fruity, singed flavour all of which masked the '88 tannins. Two years later, at a Beychevelle vertical (The Tasting Club at Buck's) I was pretty impressed but its leathery tannin more noticeable. Yet sweeter and richer than I had expected. I opened my last bottle recently at a small Sunday lunch with guests. Now medium deep; a lovely "old oak", slightly cheesy bouquet; fairly sweet, soft, chewy, ready for drinking. A good '88. M.B.
