This classic set of five windsor chairs with cabriole shaped front legs epitomises the consistently high standard of workmanship for which the London and Thames Valley chairs makers were justifiably renowned in the 18th and 19th centuries. Made in the second half of the 18th century, these chairs show the sophisticated sense of native woods which the makers would combine to greatest effect for their texture and colour. These include the wavy grained Elm seats, the prized Walnut in the arms and top bows and Cherry for the legs, stretchers and back spindles. Cherry was a preferred wood for use in Windsors for two centuries in this region and reflected its availability in the large commercially grown cherry orchards throughout the Thames Valley and into Buckinghamshire.
