A number of chairs of this distinctive design have been recorded with the strike of C.LEICESTER (Charles Leicester fl.1816-60) of Macclesfield (see Dr B. Cotton The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1990, page 368). The perched toprail is almost certainly based on a wooden device used in the local silk manufacturing trade.
