Lot Essay

This table appears to have had an intriguing life. Formerly larger (perhaps a six leg table), it was adapted, probably in the early 18th century, and given an additional hinging leaf at each end; these were later discarded, but the loper boxes survive beneath and the holes in the frieze for the lopers remain. In the mid 19th century, the legs were reshaped and ring-turned, as we see them now.
