This stool was sculpturally embellished in the 'antiquarian' taste probably under Pugin's direction circa 1845-50. Pugin 'improved' and arranged much of the oak furniture in the Cromwell Hall and elsewhere, including the two James I oak armchairs, the carved cresting and 'earpieces' of which were added under Pugin's guidance.
