Lot Essay

Colonel Robert Myddelton Biddulph's ink-stand, which is boulle-filigreed in the George IV 'Louis Quatorze' fashion, relates to those executed by the New Bond Street 'Dressing Case and Desk Maker' Elizabeth Elvey (fl. 1806-1825) ( C. Gilbert, Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, fig.320). It was illustrated on the centre table of the Cromwell Hall in an 1862 watercolour by the Hon. Mrs Mary Wombwell.
