The sitter, Robert Biddulph of Ledbury, assumed the name of Myddelton in 1801 when he married Charlotte Myddelton, co-heiress and inheritor of Chirk and the daughter or Richard Myddelton (1726-1795) and his wife Elizabeth (see lot 81), daughter of Sir John Rushout, 4th Bt. Their children were Colonel Robert Myddelton Biddulph (1805-1872), who married Fanny Mostyn Owen of Woodhouse, Shropshire (see lots 58-60) in 1832, and Lieut-General Sir Thomas Myddelton Biddulph, K.C.B. (1809-1878)
