Lot Essay

This 'gothic' heraldic 'Myddelton Biddulph' jardiniere or plant pot with stand was designed for Colonel Robert Myddelton Biddulph (d.1872). It is rose-flowered on a diagonal ribbon 'bend' alternating with trefoils , and coloured in harmony with A.W.N. Pugin's robust red and blue 'Renaissance' colour scheme introduced in the mid-1840s in Chirk's Drawing Room and Saloon, where they appear in 1862 watercolours executed by the Hon. Mrs Mary Wombwell (in an album retained by the Myddelton family). This brightly coloured earthenware jardiniere, printed by Collins and Reynolds, was executed at Messrs Minton & Co.'s Porcelain Manufacture in Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire.

A quantity of original correspondence between Myddelton-Biddulph, E. Pugin and Minton, principally dating from circa 1857-8 and concerning the tiles, is included in lot 502.
