Lot Essay

The colza-oil lamps' vase-capped tripods are conceived as 'Roman candelabra' in the antique manner promoted around 1800 by the connoisseur Thomas Hope, while similar 'Drawing Room Candelabri' are illustrated in George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808 (pl.113). Such candelabra were a speciality of Benjamin Vulliamy, 'Furniture Man' to George, Prince of Wales, later future George 1V and related candelabra at Brighton Pavilion are dated 1807 and inscribed 'Designed and Executed by Vulliamy & Son' (R.Smith, Vulliamy and the Kinnaird candelabra', Apollo, 1997, pp 30-34).
