This pier-glass, with pearl-wreathed and 'Myddelton' rose-flowered frame, bears the 'MB' cypher on its corner tablets celebrating the 1801 marriage between Robert Biddulph (d.1814) and Charlotte Myddelton (d.1843) and the consequent adoption of the Myddelton-Biddulph name. In design, it relates to the elegant Grecian fashion promoted by the connoisseur Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, and it was probably introduced as part of the improvements carried out to the family wing by Charlotte Myddelton-Biddulph under the direction of Thomas Harrison of Chester (see lot 504).
