Wageman was born in St James's, Middlesex. He was a founder member of the New Watercolour Society in 1831, but exhibited at other places as well: the Royal
Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. He had strong connections with the theatrical world - his portraits of Edmund Kean, Thomas Knight and Robert Keeley are in the Garrick Club - but painted other sitters too, such as the Marquess of Exeter, and he was appointed portrait painter to the King of Holland.
