Lot Essay

Pugin's decorator J.G. Crace gave a detailed description of their wallpaper as 'a deep warm green flock, on brown leather ground relieved with gold'. It is conceivable therefore that this screen may re-use some of the Pugin/Crace wallpaper, although it is also possible that the leather panels may have been re-used from one of the '2 Gilt leather folding Screens 4.4.0' listed in the Best Staircase in the 1795 Inventory.
