The library sofa-table, with concealed ratchet-fitted writing-slide, is a less elaborate version of a 'Sofa Writing Table' illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, pl.77. It is likely to have been commissioned by Robert Biddulph (d.1814) around the time of his marriage in 1801 to Charlotte Myddelton (d.1843), when he assumed the name Myddelton Biddulph.
