Lot Essay

This Gothic Revival billiard table light was originally supplied for the Cromwell Hall. Although the Billiard tables at Chirk had since 1680 been placed in the Long Gallery, around 1880 Richard Myddelton (d.1913) moved the 'new' billiard table made in 1840 by Thurston and Co. down to the Cromwell Hall, where it remained during Lord Howard de Walden's tenancy. The original ceiling-mounted suspension fixture, now removed, is visible in the Country Life photograph of 1952. It is possible that he may have again turned to Hardman and Co. of Birmingham to supply this.
