'The Charge of the Dutch Warr Begun Anno 1664,' 2°, manuscript on 37 leaves, ruled in red, contemporary blind-tooled calf (joints split).
The 'Dutch Wars' of the 17th century had their roots in Anglo-Dutch commercial rivalry. The first war occured in 1652-1654, the second in 1664-1667. In 1664, Robert Holmes raided the Dutch colonies on the coast of Africa, and Richard Nicolls took the Dutch colony of New Netherlands (later New York and New Jersey) in North America. War was officially declared by England in March, 1665. The above account book, detailing the cost of England's terrritorial gains, therefore has an important bearing on the history of the United States.
