FIRST EDITION. Rycaut took 1623 as the starting date for this work at the suggestion of his publishers, who were keen that it should follow on from Knolles's Turkish History. For the early years he drew heavily from Venetian historians, but he was better placed to write about the later events, as he was consul at Smyrna from 1667 to 1678. Atabey 1074; Wing R2406.
