CARDANUS, Hieronymus (1501-1576). De subtilitate. Paris: Mathurinus Dupuys, 1561.
8° (169 x 106mm). Italic type with index and shoulder notes in roman. Woodcut diagrams and floreated initials. With blank Cc8. (Some marginal staining, occasional soiling.)
BINDING: contemporary French calf, double frame of multiple blind fillets, the inner frame with gilt fleurons at outer corners, device of three interlaced crescents tooled in gilt at centre, spine compartments tooled with a single fleur-de-lys (rebacked preseving old spine, wear to spine bands, some chipping of covers and restoration to corners and edges).
PROVENANCE: 'D' (initial on title, with date 7 June 1576, and price of 12 ?francs) -- 'Renati Vallini Hannet[ensis] et Amicoru[m]' (early inscription on rear pastedown) -- sold Sotheby's, London, 1 November 1976, lot 37, to: -- C.E. Rappaport, Rome (with his bookseller's label).
Cardanus's De subtilitate, 'the most advanced presentation of physical knowledge up to its time,' was first published in folio in Nuremberg, 1550; this Paris edition, published in octavo the following year, is rare. Despite the device, the binding on this copy is difficult to attribute to a specific owner. The name on the rear pastedown has been transcribed in a pencil note as 'René Valleme d'Anet,' linking the book with the château d'Anet where the library of Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566) remained until sold by auction in 1723. However, though Diane de Poitiers used the device of the triple crescent, there is no convincing evidence for her ownership. Adams C-669.
