BINDING: Parisian red morocco gilt for Jacques-Auguste de Thou [between 1587 and 1601], sides with the arms of de Thou and his first wife, Marie Barbançon, blocked in gilt, spine gilt-lettered with title, the repeated cypher 'IAM' and with the 'mouches' above and below. Olivier 216, fers 5 and 6.
PROVENANCE: Jacques-Auguste de Thou (binding, shelf mark '1390' on front free endpaper, title to the 2nd work amended in manuscript. Bibl. Thuanae II, p. 255 & p. 316) -- Charles de Rohan, prince de Soubise (shelf mark '3.C.P.?J.3.m.125', also distinguishable on upper cover. Bibl. Soubise, 1788, lot 5114) -- Antoine-Augustin Renouard (name gilt-tooled on bottom edge of front cover; Renouard, Catalogue de la bibliothèque d'un amateur, Paris, 1819, II, pp. 87-88) -- [Bernard Quaritch, collation note on rear pastedown].
Magistrate, politician, diplomat, historian and bibliophile, Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) was appointed 'grand maître' of the Royal Library in 1593 and lifelong president of the 'Parlement' in Paris in 1595. An eminent Latinist, he wrote the Histoire de son temps and his own memoirs in Latin, and also published several collections of Latin poems. His celebrated library of about 8000 books was open to scholars and foreigners. In his will, De Thou appointed Pierre Dupuy his children's librarian. The books were inherited by Abbé Jacques-Auguste de Thou (?1653-1746); the bulk was purchased c. 1680 by Jean Jacques Charron, marquis de Menars (1644-1718); next bought in 1706 by Armand Gaston, Cardinal de Rohan (1674-1749); then inherited by his nephew, Charles de Rohan, prince de Soubise (1715-1787); to be finally dispersed in 1788 after the latter's death. The press marks refer to the books' positions in the Hôtel de Rohan. Moreni, Lorenzo Torrentino, p. 313 (1st work, noting that its use as a school text book had made this edition rare); Adams R-27 & Renouard Alde 165.7 (2nd work).
