A MID-16TH-CENTURY FRENCH PAINTED STRAPWORK BINDING, and an excellent example of this type of decoration, often found on books printed in Lyons and therefore commonly attributed to Lyonese binders. The text is a reprint of Gryphius' 1546 edition of De bello civili, prefaced by a biographical notice taken from Petrus Crinitus' Poetis latinis, of which Gryphius had published an edition in 1543. Adams L-1576; Baudrier VIII, p.214.
