16° (112 x 64mm). Woodcut printer's device on title [Baudrier 2bis]. Woodcut initials. (Variable light spotting and browning, a few leaves lightly marked or stained, a1-3 burnt, causing slight loss of text, without final blank D8.)
BINDING: bound at Lyons, mid 16th-century, red morocco gilt, boards with central gilt armorial formed of various tools enclosed by a strapwork design on a semé of pointillé tools within a border of 2 gilt fillets and a blind fillet with floral cornerpieces, gilt board-edges, spine gilt in compartments, the compartments decorated with teardrop tools, lettered in gilt at the head, gilt edges (very minor cracking on joints, a few small chips and wormholes on spine); modern brown cloth solander box. This volume is one of a group of three in similar bindings, all on works published in Lyons by Sebastian Gryphius between 1546 and 1548: the present volume; Martial's Epigrammaton (1546); Titus Livius' Latinae historiae principis (1548). All three bindings bear the same armorial (composed of various tools), within a strapwork or geometric surround filled in part or whole with a semé of pointillé tools. Although the arms are incorrectly attributed to the della Torre family by Hobson/Culot2, the suggestion made in footnote 1 that they could be those of Novarini of Verona is, in fact, correct (cf. G.B. di Crollalanza, Dizionario storico-blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane estinte e fiorenti, Pisa, 1886-1890, II, pp. 217-218 and Rietstap, Armorial général IV, pl. CCXCVII).
